Nerf War Rules For

Player Count:

Playing Time:

Game Designer:

Description:

This is based on the video game mode from Call of Duty of the same name and has a very asymmetric feel. It combines area control, attrition and attack/defend. The attackers are trying to capture two control points or eliminate the defenders. The defenders are just trying to hold out until the timer goes off. Additionally, the defenders have a shared respawn life pool whereas the attackers have infinite respawns. The attackers must hold a point for 45 seconds in order to take control of it.

Quick Reference Rules:

  1. Attackers infinite respawn. 10 second count.

  2. Defenders have a life pool of 20 lives with an instant respawn.

  3. An attacker takes control of a point by holding the button down for their team's color. They must hold each control point for a cumulative time of 45 seconds.

  4. Game ends when one of the following conditions is met, attackers capture the two points, the defenders are eliminated or the timer goes off. Note if the attackers  are holding down the button for the control points when the 5 minute game timer goes off the game enters overtime.

Detailed Rules

Do the defenders keep playing after they use up their life pool?

Yes. Those players who are still alive on the field can continue to play. Any defender who is tagged out after the life pool is used up has been eliminated.

Do the defenders need to press a button at the control point to take it back from the attackers?

No. As soon as an attacker is not holding down the button at the control point the attacker's count down should cease.

Can a player move a control point?

No

What is an example of overtime?

If the game only has 5 seconds left but the attackers manage to get to the button before the clock runs out but still have 35 seconds left to capture the point. Then once the 5 seconds run out we are in an overtime situation where the defenders would have 30 seconds to dislodge the attacker. Note as soon as the attacker lets go of the button the game ends. In other words the attackers must be actively taking the control point in order to go into overtime. If either of the control points still has time on it and doesn’t have an attacker actively holding down the button then the attackers lose if the game timer has gone off.

Other General Rules

  • Be respectful. It’s only a game.

  • Use common sense

  • Before touching someone's gear ask for permission

  • Everyone should have eye protection

  • Don't move bunkers

  • Ricochets don't count

  • Players shouldn't discuss what's going on if they haven't spawned back in.

Victory Condition:

  • Attackers win by capturing two control points or eliminating the defenders.

  • Defenders win if they can hold out until the timer goes off

Supplies Needed:

  • 2 control point timers (the timer should require the player to hold down the button in order to get the timer to count down). This can also be accomplished by having an admin with a stopwatch at each of the control points.

  • A life pool counter

Basic Supplies

  • Foam Blasters (e.g. Nerf)

  • Extra Ammo

  • Bunkers (e.g. cardboard)

  • Copy of Rules

  • Team Indicators (Optional)

Setup Required:

  • Place the control points such that the defenders have a slight advantage. The points should not be too close together.

  • Set each control point so they have a 45 second countdown requirement

  • For those using the GamModEr, select the hold continuously countdown game mode. Set the team's time to 45 seconds. Do not use the internal game length timer as it does not allow for an overtime condition.

  • The team respawns should not be too close to the control points.

  • Place the life pool at the defenders respawn

  • Set a 5 minute game timer

About Me

I only recently made the switch to being a Nerf/ Foam enthusiast back in 2018. Rather than modding Nerf blasters, I found my real passion was in the creation of game modes.
