Nerf War Rules For

King of the Hill (Basic)

Player Count:

Playing Time:

10 Min

Age:

Untested

Game Designer:

Description:

This is the classic game of two teams competing for control of the "Hill". When a team takes control of the "Hill" they are crowned "King" and the opposing team must dethrone them by pushing them off the "Hill" and taking control of it for themselves. The honor of being the "King" will pass back and forth between the two teams until eventually, one team accumulates so much time they are deemed the true King of the Hill.

Quick Reference Rules:

  1. Players take control of the "Hill" by hitting their team's timer.

  2. Players are not allowed to reset the other team’s timer.

  3. Infinite respawns. Respawn time 10 seconds

Detailed Rules

What if someone accidentally hits the timer right after getting tagged out?

They should immediately switch it back to the other team.

What if someone hits the timer too many times and it pause's the timer for both teams?

Just keep playing the game, eventually; someone will take control of the "Hill". Note: a player can correct their mistake if they recognize it before getting tagged out but should not change it once tagged out.

Group-Specific Rules

Decide On...

  • who has the final say on a disagreement about someone getting hit.

  • rules for jumping over or climbing on bunkers

  • what types of ammo are allowed

  • a dart velocity limit (I like 120 fps)

  • whether blaster hits and friendly fire count

  • rules for shields and melee weapons

  • what signifies that a player has respawned

Other General Rules

  • Be respectful. It’s only a game.

  • Use common sense

  • Before touching someone's gear ask for permission

  • Everyone should have eye protection

  • Don't move bunkers

  • Ricochets don't count

  • Players shouldn't discuss what's going on if they haven't spawned back in.

Victory Condition:

The first team to control the "Hill" for 4 minutes wins.

Supplies Needed:

For this game mode, you will need a timer. This can be as simple as a phone app or as complex as an Arduino device.

More Information

  • The phone app I most like to use is Board Game Timer by Mads Purup. Other apps like chess timers work well also. The important features in the app are the ease with which you can start the timer and that when a team starts their timer it automatically stops the other teams' timer.

  • DGT Cube timers were popular but appear to have been discontinued

  • I have not seen a commercially available Arduino style timer but here is a link to our build guide for one. I enjoyed playing with an Arduino timer at Rochester Parkour (Video).

About Me

I only recently made the switch to being a Nerf/ Foam enthusiast back in 2018. Rather than modding Nerf blasters, I found my real passion was in the creation of game modes.
